The African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) is a regional non-profit research and policy Institute established in 2010 to help bridge the gaps between research, policy and practice in development efforts in Africa. Our primary purpose is to contribute to sustainable development through using evidence and advocacy to strengthen political commitment and resource allocation for development issues; informing the design and implementation of effective interventions; and strengthening governance and accountability structures for tracking development challenges in Africa. AFIDEP is registered as a Non-Governmental Organisation in both Kenya and Malawi (where it has offices) and as a non-profit institution in the USA with 501(c)3 status. AFIDEP is looking for suitably qualified persons to work in the Malawi office as a Research and Policy Associate (Systematic Reviewer) for 6 months. Reporting to the Project Leads, the Research and policy associate will undertake systematic literature reviews for public health interventions.
Position: Research and Policy Associate (Systematic Reviewer)
Role and responsibilities
Be part of a project team to undertake systematic literature reviews, specifically:
o Determine review scope, develop protocols and publication screening/searching
o Data extraction and risk of bias assessment
o Preform meta-analyses when required
o Interpretation of results and report writing
Ensure timely delivery of high-quality project deliverables
Contribute to the presentation and development of publication manuscripts, posters, policy briefs and research summaries.
Contribute to the quality of systematic reviewing methodology quality
Contribute to the planning and organising of new systematic review projects
Actively participate in activities of the project team such as attending team meetings and advising/
teaching others regarding review methodologies.
Essential skills and experience
Experience of undertaking systematic reviews and meta-analyses or in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health or demography etc.
Good understanding of the range of research methods applied to public health and health related
interventions.
Good critical appraisal skills (i.e. have ability to understand the strengths and weaknesses of a piece of research).
Familiarity with public health related vocabulary and a good level of numeracy and literacy.
Excellent attention to detail and high standards of accuracy in all aspects of work.
Excellent organisation and problem-solving skills as well as the ability to work on own or as part of a team.
Ability to identify discrepancies and resolve them.
Experience of using various computer packages e.g. MS Word, EndNote, Mendeley; and experience of using meta-analysis software e.g. MS Excel.
Excellent communication skills, both written and orally.
Aptitude for learning new skills
Ability to work as a part of a diversified multicultural and multifunctional team
Qualifications
A Masters’ Degree in a quantitative discipline (public health, epidemiology, demography, biostatistics, health related subject etc), with at least 2 years’ experience
