INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND
The Malawi Institute of Management (MIM) is a Statutory Corporation established by an Act of Parliament No. 7 of 1989 to provide leadership and management training, consultancy and research services to the public sector, statutory corporations and the private sector in Malawi and beyond. The Institute has two specialized Directorates which are responsible for the implementation of its mandate as stipulated in the MIM Act.
POSITION: DIRECTOR OF TRAINING RESEARCH AND CONSULTANCY
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE JOB
The Director of Training, Research and Consultancy shall form part of the Executive Management and shall be responsible to the Executive Director for the efficient and effective operations of MIMs training, research and consultancy services. The successful candidate shall be responsible for strategic planning, delivery of training programmes, consultancies and research activities of the Institute.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The candidate must have proven competence in training/ teaching and learning, research and consultancy which are key performance areas the Director of Training, Research and Consultancy shall be responsible, but not limited, for the following:
Leadership and Management
Develop strategies and policy direction for training, consultancy and research;
Provide leadership in training, research, publication, consultancy and outreach to enhance the visibility and competitiveness of MIM’s programmes, activities and brand;
Formulating, implementing and constantly reviewing training, consultancy and research quality assurance policies and procedures
Representing MIM at high level meetings related to training, consultancy and research and general administrative nature;
Provide strategic leadership in the development of MIM’s training, research and consultancy portfolio which is not only effective and sustainable but also makes it competitive both the short and long-term;
Develop systems, processes and structures within MIM that ensure that it delivers quality training, research and consultancy that meet the requirements of the relevant regulations, legislation and guidelines;
Ensure that appropriate programmes or schemes exist to support progressive development of trainers, researchers and consultants signposting to external training where necessary; and
Serve as part of MIM’s leadership team and contribute to the development and execution of its strategic goals and objectives.
Training and Development
Lead the development of MIM’s short-term training programme that caters for the needs of the different segments of its clientele through regular curriculum development and reviews based on detailed needs analyses and emerging trends in public, private and not-for-profit sectors
Coordinate the development of a competent MIM training staff complement systematically and creatively augmented where necessary by adjunct faculty through coaching and mentoring in relevant traditional and modern pedagogical skills, expertise and knowledge;
Facilitate the development of relevant instructional materials for all short-term training at MIM in a manner that meets international quality standards;
Leader regular engagements with existing and potential clients as a means of getting feedback on MIM’s training programmes to promote their relevance and forge long-term partnerships; and
Lead regular evaluation efforts of the results of training programmes delivered and periodic review of the training curriculum to maintain and enhance the quality of MIM’s training programmes
Research and Publications
Lead and manage MIM’S multidisciplinary research team ensuring that their priorities are clear and understood and that they are working together to produce quality deliverables;
Lead the business development process for research including identifying opportunities and mobilizing technical and financial resources needed for quality proposal development;
Develop and roll out standards and tools for quality assurance for MIM’s work throughout the entire research cycle;
Ensure that MIM’s research activities comply with government regulations and ethical standards to enhance its utility in policy, practitioner and academic circles;
Lead the dissemination of MIM’s research findings to influence practice and policy by targeting relevant audiences in writing and presentations including practitioner-focused outlets and academic journals, outside meetings, conference and academic forums;
Lead MIM’s publication efforts of various scholarly products such as journal articles, book chapters, books, monographs, workin8 papers, policy briefs, fact sheets, blogs etc. through coaching and mentorship of staff; and
Develop an active research culture that fosters the highest achievements, encourages innovation and enriches the student learning experience as well as promotes external links and partnerships with institutions both within and outside Malawi.
Consultancy and Outreach
Lead the development of MIM’s consultancy and outreach portfolio that will progressively make it the destination of choice in the country and even beyond;
Develop and nurture a team of professionally orientated consultants that are innovative, adaptive, effective and efficient in service delivery according to the specifications and satisfaction of MIM’s clients;
Lead MIM’s engagement efforts with all its stakeholders such as government, community partners, alumni, private sector, NGOs, CSOs etc. so as to enhance the relevance and utility of its work; and
Engage with various community based organizations in MIM’s neighborhood to work towards improving the quality of life and well-being of individuals and groups through its work.
Any other duties as may be assigned by the Executive Director from time to time.
ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
The ideal candidate should have the following qualifications and experience:
A PhD majoring in Management/ Administration/ Economics/ Business Education from an accredited higher education institution.
The applicant must also have a least ten (10) years proven managerial experience at increasing level of seniority and responsibility, five (5) of which should have been in the design and implementation of academic, training, consulting and research programmes.
REQUISITE COMPETENCIES AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES
The ideal candidate for the position must:
Be knowledge of Malawi Government’s development policies and strategies, especially as they relate to capacity building;
Have Knowledge of training, consulting and research processes;
Have Leadership and Management training, consultancy and research skills;
Be able to lead and manage a multi-disciplinary team of technical and professional staff;
Strong analytical and interpersonal skills;
Possess strong organizational skills. versatility, ability to multi task and meet deadlines;
Have excellent communication skills (oral and written);
Ability to work as a team leader and member with leadership skills for coaching and developing employees;
Be mature and good communicator with adequate negotiating skills; and
Be computer literate.
